Special Activities
At Scallywags we aim to offer the children as many different activities and opportunities over and above our normal care and curriculum expected by Ofsted. This then allows them to experience and learn through a range of social skills, language skills and above all to learning through play.
Each activity is tailored to each age groups and is planned into our weekly planning.
Our Animals
At Westwick only
Looking after other living things is a big part of our learning at Scallywags. It gives the children a chance to learn about life cycles, how and why basic needs are important and to give them a sense of responsibility.
The children visit the all our animals regularly and enjoy feeding, stroking and interacting with them. The children also have the chance to see the sheep shawn and to talk to the vet when they visit. From rabbits to goats the children enjoy all interactions with all our animals which is vital for the children to learn about how to treat them and with our friendly animals who could resist!
The children are always encouraged to wash their hands after touching any of our animals and are always given reasons why.
Spanish
For Yellow Room only
The children in our Yellow Room have the opportunity to learn key words and songs in our exciting Spanish sessions each week. Our native speaking Teacher brings the language to life with songs, stories and games. The children enjoy leaning through play new words and putting them into practice with their friends.
Our sessions take place once a week and is reinforced through out the week with the room staff.
Cooking
Cooking at Scallywags is a activity that is greatly anticipated by all children and staff! We set aside 1-2 sessions a week for food related activities- allowing the children time to create a range of dishes to hopefully be samples at home! The sessions are planned with our promise to 'stop the rot' in mind as well as any other dietary requirements that any of the children may have. The children cook a range of healthy foods both sweet and savoury and food hygiene is always at the forefront of our minds.
Gardening
Being in the fresh air is always an important part of our day and combining this with looking after the environment gives the children a sense of responsibility.
The children equally enjoy planting in individual pots, large tubs or our vegetable patch. It is important to show the children where food comes from and yearly we grow various different types of fruit and vegetables. The children see the process from seed to harvest and enjoy sharing their crop with their friends and family.
